“You cant hang out with chickens and expect to soar with eagles.” -Joel Osteen

In my opinion this means the individual is going to become like the people he/she associates themselves with. If you surround yourself with positive people you’re perspective on life will be positive, if you surround yourself with negative people you will inhibit that same mentality.  Just like the saying “Birds of a feather flock together”.

I’m not really sure how to answer, because I don’t really understand what the contradictory parts are. The words themselves can and do come across as contradictory but the meaning sometimes make sense. The meaning behind “Better Safe Than Sorry” makes sense to me and has either helped or hindered me at different points in life, depending on whether or not I followed it. There are some that seem contradictory to me, one I never understood was for someone to “have your cake and eat it too” or “you can’t have your cake and eat it”. I never understood this, because cake is meant to be eaten. I know the meaning is possibly, you can’t have two things you want at the same time, but the cake part does not compute with me.

I chose the following two contradicting examples: “Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”

I’m going to relate my explanations to sweets because the first one is something I always tell myself when hiding cookies in the back of the pantry, “out of sight, out of mind”.  It doesn’t really work, but I try! The meaning behind this one is that if you aren’t visually seeing something, you will tend to forget about it. This concept is used quite often with children as you hide the annoying toy you don’t want them playing with and wait a bit for them to forget about it.

“Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is often used in terms of love, however it could also be applied to sweets. You haven’t had a slice of chocolate cake in several months due to the low carb diet you’re on. Missing and thinking about that cake makes it ten times sweeter when you finally do have it as opposed to eating a slice every day for the past couple of months. The concept is that missing something makes us tend to hold it in a higher form of reverence when we finally do have it.

Both of these examples are most commonly tied to romantic love and people, but I really love sweets so I thought I’d use that as an example!
