English 112 Participation Question One on Pink Floyd’s The Wall Directions: After reading the lyrics and watching the film, answer each question to the best of your ability. You may use your text and communicate with others in class as you develop your answers. To receive full credit, each question must be answered thoroughly and meaningfully, with a genuine attempt to analyze the text’s complexity. Please answer in the space beneath each question using a different font color than black so that your answer is readily discernible. Then submit your file for grading using the submit button. What does the wall itself represent or signify? A barrier that we build to protect us from others. What are the key “bricks in the wall” that lead to Pink’s derangement and increasing isolation and (perhaps) insanity? The lost of his father Or when Santa forgot about him (I don’t know if it is a key brick), maybe the point that he placed his faith and hope and got deceived. Explicit war imagery runs throughout the film from Pink’s father’s death in WW II, to the war movie on TV in Pink’s room, to the iron eagle that erupts out of the dove flying above the baby’s crib, to the final scene of ruin. What precipitates Pink’s recurrence to the idea of war? That is—why is he focusing on war to so great an extent? Is war and conflict among nations as well as the wall in any way related to the idea of Pink’s emotional wall designed to protect himself from others? That is, is there a connection between Pink’s personal self-protective wall and why he builds it, and a broader self-protection that leads nations to the building of actual and symbolic walls between nations? In the film version of The Wall, the telephone dangling off the receiver is a recurrent image: it happens after the father’s position is over-run; we see it again when Pink tries to call his wife and his wife’s lover answers the phone instead, and so on…. What is the significance of the telephone as a symbol in the film and why is it so often off the hook? Hammers–literal hammers, icons, etc.–are used symbolically throughout the text—what is their symbolic resonance? Why all the flags and flag imagery in the film (from the red, white, and black flag of Pink’s followers to the British Union Jack and the German flag images?) The film is riddled with images suggesting the misogynistic (woman-hating) attitude of the speaker: the animated flower scene with the castrating iris, the scene with the wife cheating on Pink, the final animation sequence with the vagina transforming into Pink’s mother who becomes a wall around Pink made of her arms, etc… What is Pink’s attitude towards women (Consider “Mother” “Don’t Leave Me Now” and other songs)? Does Roger Waters (the author) or The Wall as a whole support Pink’s attitude towards women or condemn it? What do the recurrent image of the worms symbolize in, for example, “Waiting for the Worms” and “The Trial”? What is Pink’s epiphany in the album, the moment where he realizes what he has become? What happens to Pink at the end of the disc: that is, does he escape the wall? Does he live or die? Consider the meaning of the last image…. He does not escape the wall because in the last image of the movie there are kids picking up bricks, I think he is trying to build the wall back up. Is the ending triumphant or melancholic or something else? In other words, what is its emotional context? The ending is melancholic, we see kids picking up trash that came from the war.
