Essay I: The Close Reading Essay

Length Requirement: 2-4 pages Due Date: February 27th by 7am

For this essay, you will do a close reading and written analysis of one or more texts from unit one. You will be tasked with choosing a specific literary device and evaluating the way that device is used in your chosen text(s). The most obvious devices you may choose to write about are theme, characterization, symbolism, and allegory. These four devices are commonly found in the myths and fairy tales we’ll be reading for class. However, you may choose any literary device to focus on.

Some examples:

• You may choose to look at multiple texts to show that they all share a common theme.
• You may choose to focus on the characterization of a character in one story, or of a character who is in multiple stories (e.g. Zeus/Jupiter).
• You may choose to write about a symbol from a particular story, or you may choose to write about how a particular concept/idea is symbolized in multiple texts.

A good close reading essay should include the following:

• An introductory paragraph with a clear thesis statement
• At least three quotes from the text followed by analysis
• At least three body paragraphs that work to support your thesis
• A conclusion paragraph
• A Works Cited page

This is a formal essay. Thus you should remember to do the following:

• Give your paper a proper heading
• Avoid using first person (I, we, me, us, etc.) or second person (you, your, yours). Hint: Use “one” wherever possible or just take the pronoun out of the sentence.
• Avoid using contractions such as can’t or won’t. Instead, use cannot or will not.
• Avoid slang.
• Include in-text citations for all quotes
• Adhere to all MLA formatting guidelines
