Prompt: Classical liberalism is often confused with modern American liberalism.

However, they are quite different, though much of “classical Liberalism” (the writings of John Locke, Montesquieu, Adam Smith, et al.) had a significant impact on the American War for Independence and subsequently, the Constitution of the United States.

Classical liberalism emerges during and following the Enlightenment (from the late 17th century to about the middle of the 19th century).

Modern American liberalism is more of a 20th century phenomenon.

Briefly examine both and determine the difference between the two.

What do you think was the appeal of either?

In other words, where did the political support come from for either movement? the upper classes? the middle class? the lower classes?
