Evidence-based practicing (EBP) is an approach to patient care based on problem-solving that incorporates the best evidence from well-designed clinical studies. It leads to better and efficient care at a low cost. Despite this, EBP faces numerous barriers to its implementation in my clinical area.

EBP faces resistance in its implementation from nurse managers and nurse leaders. This barrier poses a great risk since these leaders play critical roles in providing the necessary support for implementation as well as acting as role models to the nurses (Ginex, 2018). The barrier can be explained by the diverse requirements for a new change in clinical settings that make the managers and the leaders develop the resistance.

Communication factors also play significant roles in hindering the successful implementation of EBP in my clinical area. They include the format and presentation of research and the physical accessibility of the published EBP works. On some occasions, the literature is not compiled in one area, and the statistical analysis is sophisticated and hard to interpret.

The implementation of EBP in my clinical area faces the barrier of time and adequate knowledge. Most of the clinical staff experiences the scarcity of time and heavy workload, which hinders the effectiveness of many clinical findings, including the EBP (Ginex, 2018). This challenge is reinforced by the lack of adequate knowledge and experience on EBP processes such as critiquing and appraisal of literature that is related to the clinical problem that needs to be solved.

These barriers can be addressed by engaging all the stakeholders to build their trust and create an environment of learning from experience. Stakeholders play a crucial role in identifying the appropriate measures of outcomes and facilitating better planning for implementation strategies of evidence-based practices.

COLLAPSE

Indeed, the nurses also felt that EBP training, time availability, and mentoring by nurses with EBP experience would encourage them to implement EBP. The top three barriers to adopting EBP were lack of time, inability to understand statistical terms, and inadequate understanding of the jargon used in research articles.

How can we overcome these barriers?
