Ethical and Biblical Standards

Like any other organizations, the National Organization of Human Services has comprised a set of regulations and ethical codes to make sure the rights and welfare of clients aren’t compromised services rendered to people with high standards.

According to the NOHS, Standard 3, “human service professionals are obligated to protect the client’s right to privacy and confidentiality except when such confidentiality would cause serious harm to the client or others…”(Barrett, 2019). We can find some guidance here in Proverbs 11: 12-13 (NKJV) which states “Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” Building a foundation of trust is vital to establishing a good relationship between human services professionals and their clients. As well as not passing judgment on clients due to their circumstances. Human services professionals purpose is to aid those in need of help not judge them.

Proverbs 11: 14 (NKJV) says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Seeking advice or counsel is a natural thing to do. This verse is highlighted in Standard 4 that humans service professionals interactions are to remain appropriate and professional to protect the safety of their clients (Barrett, 2019). Information given to clients should always be upright as Christians are encouraged by the Word of God to do the same.

Standard 6 states that “sexual or romantic relationships with current clients are prohibited” (Barrett, 2019). Before engaging in sexual or romantic relationships with former clients, friends, or family members of former clients, human service professionals carefully evaluate potential exploitation or harm and refrain from entering into such a relationship.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 (NKJV) admonishes us, saying- “for this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.” We should not entertain the thought of or become intimate with a client or anyone that is not our spouse; it goes against the Word of God. We should stay in control of our body, adhere the Word and not engage in any sexual activity until marriage. This can help us to remain uncompromised.

The fundamental values of the human services profession include respecting the dignity and welfare of all people, promoting self-determination, honoring cultural diversity, advocating for social justice, and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity (Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals, 2019).

Respecting the dignity and welfare of all people: the scripture that focuses on this value is 1 Peter 2:17, Treat everyone you meet with dignity. Love your spiritual family. Revere God. Respect the government. I feel that this scripture describes this value perfectly because it represents how we should treat others and how there is no one better than the other. As human service professionals we must understand that we are not there to be judgmental, but to be understanding.

Promoting self-determination: the scripture that best describes this value is; So, do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10. With this scripture we can see how God has our backs and shows how he will stand for and with us. By knowing that God is on our side we can inflict self-determination on ourselves by simply saying “you got this”. If God be for you, who can be against you?

Honoring cultural diversity: Galatians 23:8 states that, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. This scripture is an example of how we must view the people we come in contact within human service. We must all be treated with the same type of fairness.

Advocating for social justice: The scripture that describes this value is coming from Jeremiah 22:3, Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. I feel that this is self-explanatory, but it also elaborates on how we must stick up for those who need advocates and as human service professionals we must always be willing to be advocates for those we meet.

Acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity: It was a little difficult finding a scripture to match this human service value but I think I found one that basically sums up what it means to act with integrity, honesty, and how we should display ourselves as overall good people in the human service profession. The scripture is; Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity. -Titus 2:7

According to the National Organization for Human Services, there are 44 ethical standards for Human Services Professionals. Honesty is an integral characteristic for a Human Services Professional to possess. Honesty is also important in the lives of Christians. 2 Corinthians 8:21 states, “For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.” It is imperative that Human Services Professionals can be trusted, especially by clients.

1 Samuel 16:7 states, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” This scripture, as well as the ethical standards for Human Services Professionals both agree that we, as Christians and Human Services Professionals, must not discriminate against anyone for any reason. “Human service professionals provide services without discrimination or preference in regards to age, ethnicity, culture, race, ability, gender, language preference, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, nationality, or other historically oppressed groups” (Barrett, 2015).

“Human service professionals…raise awareness of [the] underserved population…” (Barrett, 2015). When Jesus was here on earth, he was friend to the poor of society. Deuteronomy 15:7 states, “If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother.” We as Christians are instructed by Scripture to reach out to the underserved population, just as Human Services Professionals should raise awareness of the underserved population and do what they can to help them.

According to the ethical standards set for Human Services Professionals, if they have a disagreement or issue with a colleague, they are to go to them and seek to find a resolution. This is almost identical to what we are told to do in Matthew 18:15, “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.” We are to seek resolution with our colleagues so that those we can focus on those we serve.

“Human service professionals [are to] seek appropriate consultation and supervision to assist in decision-making when there are legal, ethical or other dilemmas” (Barrett, 2015). Just as Christians are to pray to seek God’s guidance. Psalm 25:4, “Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation.”
