Notes on Essay :

Think of this as a puzzle. The issue and the facts are your pieces, so it’s your job to arrange them in a way that makes sense. You can create one or two additional pieces based on personal experience, but for the most part you should work with the facts presented in the prompt (no outside research, no invented facts).

This is a prompt from an English proficiency test given out at SF State. I used to grade these for a bit of extra money on the weekends. I’d sit in a room full of English professors and grade them at a rate of about five per hour. Two readers graded each test on a 1-4 scale, with 3 as a pass and 4 as a “high pass.” If the two readers differed on whether a student passed (i.e. one gave the essay a 2 and one a 3), a third “team leader” would then read the essay and make a final decision. We read for the basics, so generally about one in five essays needed to be re-read by the team leader.

It’s a highly formulaic approach to writing, but it’s also a good way for each of you to demonstrate your ability to use the techniques we’ve studied in this class to structure an argument and quickly produce a brief persuasive essay.

Give yourself 30 minutes to write an outline, and 60 minutes to turn that outline into an essay. You don’t need to submit your outline, but it should look something like this:
