Your response should be 4-5 pages (double-spaced) and written in a formal scholarly manner. Your response will be evaluated based on how well you demonstrate your understanding of a particular concept and how convincingly you apply that concept in your analysis. Any ideas or direct quotations pulled from scholarly work, lecture materials, and/or blog posts written by other classmates must be properly cited. Failure to do so will result in an automatically ‘Fail’ for this assignment. Please don’t hesitate to consult with your professor if you are unsure about proper citation protocols.
Answer only one of the following three essay questions:
1) How have we defined the concept of “hybridity” in this course thus far? How might we use the concept to understand K-Pop as an industry, cultural history, genre, etc.? Your response should draw from at least 2 assigned readings and include examples from 2-3 clips screened in class. Please be as specific as possible in your response.
2) How does Seungsook Moon define “militarized modernity?” How does this concept shape your understanding of K-Pop’s development as a culture industry? Your response should incorporate at least 2-3 clips screened in class to support your analysis, but can also include examples of media clips drawn from outside as class as well. Just be sure to include the proper citation information for them (i.e., clip title, date published, URL, etc.) like you would for a scholarly work.
3) Compare and contrast the brand identities and marketing practices between two of Korea’s “Big Three” record companies (SM, YG, and JYP). Your answer should incorporate relevant arguments made in at least two essays we have read thus far, and at least three media clips we have screened in class to support your analysis.
