Great Man (Women) Theory

Much of written history has emphasized the role of the individual as the shaper of great events, but many modern historians talk of social, economic, or political forces that are the real cause of important happenings. To these contemporary historians the traditional hero of history just happens to be someone at the right time and place. The period of time covered by this chapter is full of larger-than-life personalities as seen in the list found in the Introduction to this module. Choose one of these men or women and describe what historical forces they expressed—they personified— in their careers. What were the major achievements of their lives? Your text may not be sufficient, and you will want to Google your chosen person to see what further information you can find.
