Question 1: consider the issue of patronage and how it has influenced and made possible so much of our artistic heritage.  Explain how a shift in artistic patronage signified the diminishing power of the church and give an example of an artwork or musical composition, artist or composer.

Question 2:Chapter 24 explores key developments and principles of the Enlightenment. It also covers Europe’s increasing encounter with cultures around the globe that were very different (pp. 785-791). Besides this chapter, also review the summary at the link below. Then, discuss the philosophical views of the Enlightenment.  What ideas are still within mainstream Western society today?  Which ideas do you think were especially important developments for their day?
