1) A thesis statement. This should be 50-200 words, summarizing the result of your paper.
The thesis statement should be 50-200 words stating the main point(s) or conclusion(s) of your research paper. Check the linked site below for some further information on thesis statements. Since you are writing an argumentative paper, you will want especially to read the sections on a thesis statement for an argumentative or persuasive essay.
Example of a thesis statement: I here argue there are three main reasons that abortion should be allowed: 1) Women should have an inalienable right to determine what to do with their own bodies. 2) There is no medical or cultural consensus about whether a fetus is a human person, so in a pluralist society that has a separation of church and state the decision about abortion must be left to individuals to decide. 3) Outlawing abortions does not mean they won’t occur; and in fact the countries with the lowest number of abortions are countries in which safe abortions are coupled with rational family planning.
2) An outline. This should provide as much detail of the structure of the paper as possible.
For help on outlines and thesis statements check the following link:
3) The works cited section for your essay, with at least four sources.
Works cited should be done in alliance with the MLA guidelines unless otherwise agreed upon with the professor. You can find a sample page here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_sample_works_cited_page.html
Write a three page essay (1050 words) on the topic of your debate. The essay should be a position paper, providing an argument. It should be double spaced, have one inch margins and be in 12 pt. print. Follow the MLA guide unless otherwise agreed upon. The essay will be graded on its coherence, clarity, demonstrated understanding of the main views for the position (or thorough grasp of one main view). It will be also be graded based on proper grammar and citation of sources. See the class rubric and the notes on the syllabus for more on grading.
(Paper: MLA style: double space, font size 12 – times new roman, works cited page).
Your three-page essay can deal with one of the normative theories of the class or your debate topic. See blackboard for more on the essay assignment and the rubric.
Previous to the essay, an outline, thesis statement and the works cited page will be submitted, along with a 250 word abstract summary of the essay.
