DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL, METALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING PCT301T GROUP PROJECT PROJECT TITLE Group Assignment GROUP NAME GROUP MEMBERS [NAME, SURNAME] [STUDENT NUMBER] PROGRAMME NAME NATIONAL DIPLOMA : CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DUE DATE 03-JANUARY-2021 at 12:00 PM (on brightspace) IMPORTANT NOTE AND DECLARATION Your assignment must be typed in Arial 12, 1.5 spacing, and presented as a professional document that adheres to scientific writing principles The use of this template is compulsory A maximum of 7 scientific references should be used Should not be shorter than 10 pages and not longer than 20 pages, excluding the Self Evaluation and Reference list Include the coversheets Submissions are done through D2L learning management system. You will notice that questions do not have individual mark allocation. Your insight and ability to integrate, apply, calculate and balance theory and praxis is assessed. Individual marks are allocated in the project reporting section / rubric and the quality of your answers should be deduced from the lecturer’s comments and the above matrix Your Assignment should include a statement declaring that this is your own work and that all resources have been appropriately referenced: We as (GROUP) declare that this Assignment is our own collective effort and that all resources have been appropriately referenced in the text and in the Reference list ___________________________________________________ (ELECTRONIC SIGNATURES) all team members (DATE) GROUP PROJECT MARK SHEET (REPORT AND PRESENTATION) Course Module: PCT301T Lecturer: Dr ML Moropeng Group: Evaluation Criteria 75%+ 68%+ 60%+ 50%+ 49%- Group Assignment Report [100 marks] Understanding the course content (Have students done sufficient reading) [20] Applying appropriate theory concepts (Demonstrating insight & understanding reason, identify, interpret concepts and theory in own words, infer, make comparisons discuss, differentiate, make comparisons) [20] (Evaluate facts and information, critique, justify, motivate assertions, comments, contrast, resolve issues/problems, propose solutions) [20] Conclusions, recommendations, Lessons to be learnt, application to reality [10] Technical presentation, executive summary, syntax, illustrations, references & summary, language, bibliography [20] Self-Evaluation and Critical Cross-Field Questionnaires – Group view [10] TOTAL: LECTURER’S COMMENTS: GROUP SELF-EVALUATION Assign yourself a grade/mark Why did you assign this mark in your self-evaluation? What mark do you think you should get for the project? Where in your assignment (sections, aspects) did you perform at your best….And at your worst? Did you find the class and prescribed material useful? Did you use additional sources? If your answer is “yes”, describe or name these sources. How much time did you spend on the assignment? Which competencies, areas of knowledge, skills and other qualities did you need to complete this assignment? Did completing this assignment and consulting the relevant sources improve your competence as a fluid process engineer? Name a few competencies that you think should be developed further. What aspects of the course, study material, and your learning experience would you like to improve? How? How would you describe the quality of the learning material (tutorial, study guide, prescribed book)? Please elaborate. Do the assignment tasks reflect the learning outcomes? Were the lecturer and tutor support of an expected standard? Please elaborate. The Project background Consider the process flow sheet shown in figure 1. Methanol reacts with CAN (Acrylonitrile) to form MPN (Methoxypropionitrile). A slight excess (2%) of ACN is supplied and essentially all of the methanol is reacted. There is no purge stream, so the excess ACN appears in the MPN product stream. Here, the recycle stream is liquid –phase distillation stream. Without sufficient control, this process is unstable because it is highly non-linear LN QUESTIONS Investigate about this process to fully understand how it operates, and answer the following questions with motivation(s): Identify the primary objective of the process. Specify all the process variables in terms of the disturbance, manipulated and the controlled. Place a control loop in every control valve in the process and indicate the mechanism of control. Develop the mathematical equations describing both the mass and the heat duties in the distillation column, and the blending process. (Clearly state all your assumptions). Draw a series of transfer function block diagram for the whole of the MNP process. Tag all valves on the diagram with FAIL – SAFE designs tags, and motivate for your choice. In answering to the project, you are allowed to expand your work with reasons to simply the process calculations, by making assumptions which are reasonable. Reporting format / rubric Item Description Mark allocation 1. Introduction – brief discussion in leveling your understanding of the process 15 2. Methodology – Describe the systematic procedure on calculation execution and reasoning on assumptions made. 20 3. Explain, and justify all your calculations in to findings 20 4. Conclusions – Have the goals of design been achieved? If not, discuss why. 15 5 Recommendations 5 5. Pages, tables, equations numbering. Grammar, spelling and narration logic. 15 6. List of references – If you use information taken from some sources of information (books, journal papers, websites), then the sources have to appear in your references. In your report each source of information has to be inked to the text, i.e. in text reference. 10 9
