English 105 Assignment: Research Essay Proposal Length: 800-900 Words This proposal is the first step in writing your research paper. Its purpose is to help you begin brainstorming and narrowing down your research topic, generate ideas relating to your research topic, start the research process, and formulate questions you may wish to consider when writing your paper. This proposal does not bind you to the outlined research topic and plan. That is, you may change your mind about the direction of your research at any time. Make sure to model your proposal on the one that I analyzed in my previous Powerpoint lecture on essay proposals. In the first paragraph, you will introduce your topic and then present a very brief – three to six sentences – literature review. In this literature review you may note areas of agreement and or disagreement, inconclusive research, or the existence of a knowledge gap. You will need to discuss three sources in your literature review. You will conclude the paragraph with a research question. In the second paragraph, you will outline your approach or research methodology. That is, you will explain how you will go about conducting your research. You may discuss the significance of the study here. You will then offer a hypothesis that will answer the research question posed above. You will conclude the second paragraph by noting the significance of your research. You will conclude your proposal with an Annotated Works Cited. This list should include three sources, the same three that you discuss in the first paragraph of your proposal. *Note that the difference between a Works Cited and a Bibliography is that in a Works Cited you only list the sources that you have cited in your work – in this case, in the literature review. In a bibliography, on the other hand, all the works consulted in preparing your document are listed.
