Forensic Chemistry Focused Research Paper and Presentation (targeting a minimum of 3500 words including references) Students will conduct library-based research on a topic related in some way to the field of forensic chemistry. Students will be able to select a topic in forensic chemistry of interest to them (see the schedule for topic selection date, first draft submission, feedback return, and final submission dates). The research paper should be submitted to SafeAssign on Blackboard. Both your first and final draft should be submitted. Be sure to cite the research appropriately and this will not be an issue. Instructions / Details: All students will select (1) one real case study, or (2) a journal article in which at least one type/form of chemical evidence highly impacted a case, or (3) a forensic chemical analysis technique used in a particular case to examine and to use for the basis of their paper and presentation. Students may discuss more than one type/form of chemical evidence for their particular case study but should be limited to no more than 3 types of chemical evidence (i.e. fingerprints, hairs, fibers, other trace evidence such as volatile organic chemicals, explosives, microbial, drugs of abuse, false positive effects with OTC medications, etc.); more than one case study may be discussed if appropriate. The case study must include at least one form of chemical evidence which highly impacted the outcome of the crime scene or the identification/association of a perpetrator (forensic linkage triangle). The chemical evidence, as well as, the analysis/comparison/testing of this chemical evidence must be described in detail, including how it impacted the case. The research paper will contain a minimum of 3500 words and provide a title, abstract, introduction, experimental methods, results and discussion, and conclusions sections very similar to an actual research paper published in a professional journal (e.g., a paper in Forensic Science International (FSI)). More details will be forthcoming on suggestions for how to accomplish this task. The students will have the opportunity to submit a draft that will be critiqued by the instructor (not graded) and promptly returned. A final version will be required for submission, as per the schedule, for grading. APA FORMAT
