POST 1:

First ethical issue discussed was the United Airlines dragging a passenger off the plane and the video that went viral from this incident. Overall, this incident was handled poorly by management and caused public outcry along with calls for boycott of this airline. From a management standpoint it was sanitized and the apology was not as sincere as the public expected. Also overall for management when an issue that ethically arises it causes secondary and tertiary issues i.e. more complaints to airline representatives, all employees having to acknowledge and respond to questions about events, and overall chance of loss of profit if the public outcry is enough. In this situation the person who was treated aggressively by security settled out of court and just like in many situations this was over time forgotten by the court of public opinion.

The other story that I read in the article below is about Weinstein and Co. and discusses the sexual harassment and assault allegations made by over 100 women against him overtime. “Starting in October, more than 100 actresses came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against the Hollywood kingpin dating back for decades. Weinstein apologized — but it wasn’t enough to save the producer of Oscar-winning films from termination from Weinstein Co. Nor did it calm the public’s growing outrage over how Weinstein had managed to maintain his position” (Fortune, 2017). Overall this situation caused a major outcry and many survivors came forward to ensure that justice was served against this perpetrator. This impacted his company as he will no longer be part of the film industry despite the many people that tried to protect him along the way.

Both of these situations have similarities to things that have happened in the Army. There have been incidents of hazing and physical abuse of recruits and Soldiers along with many sexual harassment and assault investigations throughout the organization.

POST 2:

After completing a scavenger hunt, I stumbled across Well Fargo as a negative example of an organization that dealt with ethical issues and choose 3M as an organization that executes positive ethics.

Over the past year and a half, the Well Fargo has admitted to creating fake accounts, hitting customers with unfair mortgage fees, and charging people for car insurance they didn’t need. On September 16, 2016, the fake account scandal broke wide open as federal regulators revealed that employees secretly created millions of unauthorized bank and credit card accounts without their customers knowing it. On the contrary, the bank’s management believed that the increased number of clients was an indication of increased sales and profitability. As a result, they pressurized their workers to sell as many accounts as possible, but the managers failed to scrutinize their numbers to ascertain if they were genuine. Last week, we talked about managers, and I think it is safe to say that this makes such managers liable for the neglect of duty.

I am not sure how many of you are familiar with The Ethisphere Institute, but they are the global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices that fuel corporate character, marketplace trust, and business success (Ethisphere, n.d.). According to The Ethisphere Institute, 3M is rank #1 (five years in a row) as the 2018 most ethical companies in the world. 3M plays a critical role to influence and drive positive change in the business community and societies around the world and work to maximize their impact wherever possible (Companies, n.d.). It is evident that 3M is a company that does not retaliate against whistleblowers, they reward their employees, and they take the time to investigate and resolve ethical issues when they arise.
