The board of nursing (BONs) is a government administrative agency that holds the authority and obligation to implement laws and guidelines governing the practice of nursing in the concern of public protection. BONs also shape the principles for safe and proficient care and issuing licenses to practice. Every state decides how their BON will implement this duty (Murray, 2017). On the other hand professional organizations establish standards of practice for specialty practice. They do so by implementing a certification process, these organizations also regulate who can use the specialty titles within their scope. Some of the typical requirements for these certifications include continuing education and documentation of practice competency. However, professional organizations do not have legal authority to necessitate compliance by certificate holders (Milstead, 2016).

The major methods of credentialing is decided by the state, and is centered off of two factors: (1) the risk for harm to the public if safe and adequate standards of practice are not met, and (2) the level of autonomy and responsibility for decision making that is measured as standard practice for a particular profession. There are four methods of credentialing which include, licensure, registration, certification and recognition (Milstead, 2016).
The benefits of the licensure method is that it offers the highest level of security by limiting use of the title and the scope of practice to the license professional who has met these laborious criteria. One of the weaknesses would be the limits on being able to measure the proficiency of each profession. Benefits of registration include the ability to review an individual’s credentials. A weakness of this method is because a person is able to practice without the use of a title, it does not fully protect the public. The benefits of the method of certification include the protection of one’s title and allows employers to determine eligibility for positons. Credentialing and privileging are significant to APRN practice in an acute care setting because the processes help recognize the scope of practice of APRNs, encourage responsibility for practice, apply professional standards for practice, permit third party billing for services, and communicate the scope of practice to other clinicians (Kleinpell, Hravnak, Hinch, & Llewellyn, 2008).
