When working with diverse populations in the community, the Public Health Nurse will need to be made aware of issues that will arise. Of these issues that will evolve are stereotypes, bias, and implicit bias. A stereotype is defined as a preconceived assumption regarding a certain group of people. A bias is a personal feeling or attitude toward a person or group based upon the stereotype associated with the individual or group of people. An implicit bias is a term used within the health care community. It is the unconscious attitude displayed based on stereotypes that directly affect understanding, decisions, and actions that may impact patient care. This type of bias is associated with a larger number of healthcare workers (Falkner, 2018). It is important for the Public Health Nurse to recognize these issues in the community. The nurse should be aware of these issues and be a strong advocate for those who have experienced this kind of discrimination. There are several ways that the nurse can do these things: Recognizing that a response is based on stereotype and consciously adjusting the response, Imagining the individual as the opposite of the stereotype, Putting themselves in the other personā€™s shoes, and learning about their personal history and the context that brought them to the doctorā€™s office or health center (IHI Multimedia Team, 2017). Cultural competence is imperative as a nursing skill. When completing a thorough assessment, it is important for the nurse to obtain a complete history that includes all aspects of the cultural assessment and needs. Incorporating cultural assessment is a requirement for all assessments in order to provide culturally competent care. The LEARN model is one type of communication tool that is effective in providing cultural competent nursing care. The 5 steps of this model are L-learn, E-explain, A-acknowledge, R-recommend, N-negotiate. Strategies that can be used to increase culturally competent nursing care are to perform a cultural competence self-assessment, obtain a certificate in cultural competence, improve communication and language barriers, improve dialogue by taking care of patients from different cultures and backgrounds, and participate in online chats and networks (Seal & Wiske, 2018).
