Each student is required to read a current (withing one week of assignment) affairs article dealing with some facet of international importance. The article may pertain travel and tourism or it may relate to some aspect of international affairs which would impact travel and tourism(e.g. crime, terrorism, health concerns, political considerations, etc.). The articles may be found in magazines, newspapers, journals or on the internet. You will be required to share a synopsis of the article with your classmates and with the instructor. Therefore, one copy of the synopsis will be posted as a discussion item and one copy will be submitted to the instructor via the dropbox. The synopsis should be approximately 100 words in length. Class members are also required to respond as a discussion thread to at least one other student’s synopsis during the week the update is due.

As the centuries-old tour company and airline in Britain, Thomas Cook officially declared bankruptcy and applied compulsory liquidation to the high court on Monday. However, there are thousands of tourists stranded around the globe due to Thomas Cook has ceased immediately. Right now, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promising that government will help stranded British travelers to return home, and he also revealed that the UK had previously rejected Thomas Cook’s request for a bailout of about £150m because of the moral hazard. In fact, Thomas Cook operates hotel, resorts and airline business in the global of 16 countries, and serves millions of tourists every year. The shutdown of Thomas Cook could have a chain reaction in many destinations where the company operated, and also bring pressure to governments and insurance companies to coordinate the rescue.
