If you have data and facts and statistics, keep them for the body paragraphs. Make them their own paragraph. The intro should contain three things – an overall introduction to the topic, a little more specific intro to the specific commercials you are talking about, and then a clear thesis statement about those commercials. The thesis is NOT one commercial is better than the other, or worse, or they are using the same methods. That is a half a thesis statement. The thesis statement is HOW or WHY they are better (to your mind), because that is what you will be explaining in this essay. Always remember you have to explain things to your reader. Do not assume they know automatically what you are talking about. The second thing to see is the summary. Each commercial should be summarized in its own paragraph. You tell your reader what is happening in the commercial and always PRESENT TENSE to do so. Avoid -ed ending words, -ed ending words are always past tense. Only use the last names of the actor in the commercial when talking about them. Commercial names are ALWAYS (in MLA) in quote marks. The reason this is done is so that it stands out in the sentence. So, the rest of the sentence is not in italics, is not in quote marks and then all of a sudden the title of the commercial is in quote marks, so your reader knows “Oh, that’s the name of the commercial”. This essay asks you to do the same with two different visual media – summarize and respond. THEN, contrast them and make them a point about them. That point whatever it may be is the thesis of your paper. Basically, why did you pick these two specific commercials to pair together? What is the point you are trying about them? Also, never end paragraphs in a question mark. Be consistent with upper-case capitalization and using lower-case, especially with titles. Also, do not randomly capitalize words in the middle of sentences. Also, don’t repeat transition (like “also”) on a regular basis. Avoid self-reference – try to not use “I”, or “me”, or “my” or even “you”. Use it sparingly. Use third person impersonal. For future reference, try to stop self- reference. Be consistent, not just with capitalization, but with formatting across the board, especially with paragraphs. All paragraphs should be indented and spaced the same across the paper. Finally, when it comes to conclusions, the ending of the paper should be interesting. So often it seems like people just ran out of things to say. Remember, the conclusion is the last thing your readers read and thus will be the last thing they remember. You want the paper to end on a bang. You should put your final thoughts on the issue and leave your reader with something to think as they walk away. Also, keep in mind that your paper is about the commercials, so the ending should be about the commercials and your introduction should be about commercials.
