PSY/110 v4 Time Management Matrix Being successful at time management takes thoughtful planning and honest evaluation of how you are spending your time. Making time for your schoolwork and other activities that support your academic goals is very important to your success as a student. As a University of Phoenix student, some of the school-related tasks you need to budget time for are: Time to complete textbook readings and other learning activities in the course, such as videos, articles, or website explorations Time to attend class if you are at a local campus—or time to complete weekly graded Discussion Questions (DQs) if you attend class in the online campus Assignment preparation time (time to preview your assignments and complete any prework), which may include time for: Activities to complete before doing the assignment Research to complete before doing the assignment Assignment work time (time that you create and/or write what you will submit for your assignment) The purpose of this activity is for you to look at a typical week of activities for you, including your University of Phoenix schoolwork; evaluate the amount of time you spend doing these activities; and make a schedule that helps you manage your time well to be a successful student. As a starting point to this, let’s review the categories of time from the textbook for analyzing how you spend your time: Committed time: This is time you dedicate to family, school, work, and other activities that support your goals. It’s usually a set amount of time in your schedule. Maintenance time: This is time you spend maintaining—or taking care of—yourself and your environment. Examples of maintenance time include sleeping, eating, working out, doing chores, and taking care of pets. Maintenance time is a little more flexible than committed time. Discretionary time: This is time that you can use to do whatever you want to do, such as enjoying your hobbies, hanging out with friends, watching TV, or going out. Discretionary time is your most flexible type of time. Now, review your results from completing “Activity 40: Time-Demand Survey” in Psychology of Success and ask yourself the following questions: In which category of time do I spend most of my hours? Am I overcommitted or undercommitted? How can I bring this into better balance? Am I making sure that I have allowed the amount of time that I need to be a successful student? Next, let’s have you dig a little deeper into each of the categories of time and consider the specific activities you do in a typical week so that you can prioritize and manage your time the best way possible to fit you and your needs. Part 1: Time & Activities Table Complete the table below by listing 5–7 specific activities, other than your University of Phoenix school-related tasks, that you do in a typical week within each category of time. You will be adding the school-related tasks in Part 2 of this assignment. Prioritize each list of activities by writing the most important activity at the top and working your way down with the next most important, and so on. Create a one-week block schedule based on your Time & Activities Table and your University of Phoenix school-related tasks. Place your activities into the schedule for the time(s) when you actually do them or when you plan to do them.
