Art Reacting to the Industrial Revolution

Respond to following statement:
I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6. It is titled “Recollections of country life”. It has 5 movements. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 is the forerunner of the romantic symphony. It is programmatic, telling a story. It is based on nature, a common theme in the romantic era. While a typical romantic symphony still had four movements, Beethoven stretched this by adding a fifth movement.  The first movement is in sonata form and is titled “Awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival in the country”. It has two beautiful rustic themes. The second movement is titled “Scene at the brook” and depicts a bubbling stream on a calm day.  The third movement is a scherzo and depicts a country dance being titled “Happy gathering of country folk”. The fourth movement is a huge angry work with strings and timpani playing a sonic representation of a downpour with lightning and thunder. The storm finally subsides giving way to the fifth movement titled “Shepherd’s song: Cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm.”  After listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 I believe that it is more on the romantic side than classical. Some of the key features that brought me to this conclusion are that while listening to the first movement, the sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume sounds very romantic. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. The final movement seemed more relaxing to listen to. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in romantic music and the texture of classical music, this piece is very romantic. A modern day composer that I found was Ray Charles. His music ranged from R&B, gospel, pop and country. Because of his distinct sound, he was considered a musical genius.
