ENGR 1201 Introduction to Engineering Technical/Research Paper Assignment DUE 3 December 2021 according to course schedule Each student will write a technical research paper in this course with the outline and both the draft and final (revised) versions reviewed/checked off by the University writing center by 29 October, 2021. You will submit with your final paper the sheet showing your visit and the suggested changes. The paper’s length is to be 8-10 pages, including references. In your paper you will research an engineer, inventor/invention and/or an engineering item that affected our world. You will address all engineering constraints as well as what contemporary issues were considered when addressing the problem at hand and what impact did their solution have especially in a global and societal context. Structure: The general structured components of your technical paper are outlined below. Abstract: a stand-alone paragraph that describes the thesis (central theme) of the paper. The abstract is generally completed after the paper has been written, but an initial abstract with outline sets the direction of the research and the paper. Introduction: a section to give background information on the topic. This section states why the topic is important and includes any relevant theory and results from the work of others. Main body: the section of the paper in which the topic of the paper is given its development. Conclusion: a brief summary of the information in the paper. Unlike the abstract, this section is not required to be self-contained and can therefore make references to material in the body of the paper. References: a listing of the published sources of background information for the paper that support the citations within your paper. At least six references are required in this paper. Only two references may be from an internet site. One reference must be from an appropriate professional journal. All sources listed in the References section must be cited in the text. The source of data in tables must be acknowledged with a reference unless the data are the work of the author. A title is to be placed above each table. Tables will be referenced in the text as “Table 1,” etc. Figures: Drawings, graphs, and photographs may be introduced as figures. Each figure must have a caption placed below it. Each figure must have a reference if it is derived from a published source; no reference is necessary if the figure is the original work of the author. Figures will be referenced in the text as “Fig. 1,” “Fig. 2,” etc., unless the sentence begins with the word “Figure” (which is then spelled out in full). Equations: Equations are not required in this technical paper but may be used if appropriate. Equations are to be separated from the text with a blank line before and after the equation. Equations are to be numbered consecutively with equation numbers enclosed in parentheses at the right end of the equation line. An equation is referenced in the text in the form “Eq. (1).” A group of equations can be referenced in the form “Eqs. (3)–(5).” References: References in the paper will be numbered sequentially with numbers enclosed in square brackets [ ].
