Directions: In this “modified writing assignment” you will create a complete (full sentence) outline for a special occasion speech by responding to four (4) prompts about CONTEXT, INTRODUCTION, BODY, & CONCLUSION. Your goal is to develop a special occasion or “Praise” speech outline about a specific person.

You will want to draw on general and specific knowledge of this particular person to create this outline. You are encouraged to develop a speech outline for a speech that you might actually give. Consider graduations, inductions, weddings, funerals, award ceremonies (introductions of and presentations of awards/honor, and acceptances).

You do not need to provide outside sources.* However, if you decide to include outside material (including quotations), you must cite it in your outline and provide a “References” page. Be sure to specify the venue and event at which you’re speaking. Craft your outline in the responses below based on the SPC2608 Student Handbook’s “Praise Speech Outline Example.”

Speech Title:

Education for All

Public Figure: Malala Yousafzai

General Purpose: To inform + To persuade = To praise

Specific Purpose: To praise Malala Yousafzai as an agent of global change to my classmates

Thesis: Malala Yousafzai fights for the human right of education.

Introduction

1. Attention Getter: Imagine sitting on the bus on your way to school. You are thinking about your upcoming assignments and exams when an armed citizen stops the bus and asks for you by name. You have nowhere to run. On October 9th, 2012, fifteen-year-old, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head on the bus on her way to school. Her crime: attending school and speaking out to promote education for girls and women.
2. Credibility & Common Ground: Before I learned of Malala’s story and her educational campaign I never thought much about my own schooling let alone educational opportunities in other parts of the world, like Pakistan, where Malala was born and raised. However, after learning about Malala and The Malala Fund, I can no longer take my education for granted. Not only is Malala a Nobel Peace Prize winner, but she is also a role model for all of us pursuing a college education.
3. Thesis: Malala Yousafzai fights for the human right of education for all, and particularly for girls and women.
4. Preview Statement: I will cover two areas:
   1. Malala’s activism: She promotes education for all on behalf of children and women to whom schooling is denied.
   2. Malala’s philanthropy: She began the “Malala Fund” to advocate for education and investment in community projects that foster education.

Transition: I would like to begin by telling you about how Malala began working as an educational activist.

Body

Main Point 1: Malala’s Activism: I have chosen to attend college because earning a Bachelor’s degree means learning about different ideas, perspectives, and people. To me, this is the main purpose of education, which is why Malala’s story and her educational activism resonate with me strongly.

1. 1. School Attendance: In her memoir published in 2014, I am Malala: How one girl stood up for education and changed the world, Malala writes of how she was encouraged by her parents to attend a girls school run by her father, even beyond the time that most girls stop their schooling. She attends school in Pakistan until age 15, when she is shot by a member of the Taliban and her family moves to Birmingham, England (Yousafzai & McCormick, 2014).
   2. Her memoirs from 2013 and 2014 also indicate Malala’s campaigns for girl’s education in Swat Valley, Pakistan: When the Taliban threatens education in Pakistan, Malala writes an anonymous blog for BBC Urdu in addition to making public appearances to speak out in favor of education (Yousafzai & Lamb, 2013; Yousafzai & McCormick, 2014).
   3. National Youth Peace Prize: In 2011, Malala is awarded the first National Youth Peace Prize in Pakistan, after which the Taliban make written threats on her life (Yousafzai & McCormick, 2014; malala.org).
   4. Nobel Peace Prize Winner (2014): Along with Kailash Satyarthi, Malala wins the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, for her “struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education” as quoted on the Nobel Prize website. (nobelprize.org).

Transition: In addition to her work as a prominent public speaker, Malala engages in philanthropic work across the globe through “The Malala Fund.”

Main Point 2: Malala’s Philanthropy: Malala’s philanthropic work: For change to happen, causes need committed individuals, like Malala, and money. Malala has started “The Malala Fund” to raise awareness, support, and money for the education of girls around the world.

1. 1. Programs “The Malala Fund” supports: Programs in Pakistan, Nigeria Jordan and Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Kenya (malala.org).
   2. According to Malala.org, 3.5 million committed to projects for 2014-2016 (malala.org).
   3. Online Donations: Anyone can donate money online to The Malala Fund as a one-time or recurring payment.

Transition: I would like to conclude this speech by asking you to remember Malala as you leave this class today thinking about how different your life would be if you were denied an education.

III. Conclusion

1. Review Main Points: I have provided examples of Malala’s activism and For these reasons I believe she is worthy of our praise and my admiration.
2. Restate Thesis: I hope that you now see how Malala Yousafzai builds and transforms lives by campaigning for the human right of education for all, and particularly for girls and women. (
3. Clincher: As you work toward the goal of graduation, and before you leave the university to make your mark upon the world, keep daily in your mind the inspiring words of Malala in an address to Harvard students: “Let us make our future now, and let us make our dreams tomorrow’s reality” (McQuarrie, 2013).
