Digital forensics refers to a branch of science that encompasses the investigation and recovery of materials found in different digital devices such as phones, digital cameras and computers. Mobile technology has consistently become one of the most powerful tools for fighting crimes. For instance, cell phones contain text messages, call history, contacts, Global Positioning System, emails and browser history. They also include other forms of location information that law enforcement agencies and police officers find valuable (McGuire & Holt, 2017). Evidence collected from mobile phones can help the investigators piece together events and motives as well as provide new leads to a particular case. Cell phones are regularly used in criminal investigations. They provide primary data on communication such as call records, message records and GPS locations.
Law enforcement agencies virtually encounter numerous issues on a daily basis. As a result, they use technology to address these matters. Hence, technology tends to help justice personnel and law enforcement agencies stay one-step ahead of the criminals.
However, at times the use of technology can prove to be unethical. This happens when it violates the right to privacy of an individual (Pattavina, 2015). The right to privacy refers to an element of different legal traditions aimed at restraining private and government actions that tend to threaten the privacy of people. The right to privacy is considered a fundamental human right. People tend to value their privacy, and tend to value control over who knows some information about them. Therefore, use of technology to curb crimes tends to undermine the privacy of individuals by accessing personal information.
