• Geog 30 1 • Page 1 of 3 KEY There are many ways to express the location of a given place on Earth. For the sake of accuracy, it is best to use a mathematical coordinate system. There are many, and this activity will only focus on one for now, the traditional Geographic Grid (latitu de and longitude). ***** Section 1 : The Geographic Grid (Latitude and Longitude) This is a simple concept that commonly gets confused. We’ll start with the Equator , which is an imaginary circle dividing Earth halfway between the North and South Poles. Simply stated, latitude measures distance, in degrees, north or south of the Equator (which is designated as 0  Latitude). Longitude, on the other hand, measures distance, in degrees, east or west of the Prime Meridian (which is designated as 0  Longitude). This means that when you move up and down on a standard map, the latitude changes; when you move left or right, your longitude changes. See the figure on the next page for a graphical depiction. One degree of latitude or longitude can be divided into 60 minutes for greater accuracy. For example, 38.5  North can be expressed as 38  30’ North (30’ = 30 minutes). Further, one minute of latitude or longitude can be divided into 60 seconds, although we will not need such accuracy for now. 1. Using the figure at the right, accurately estimate the latitude (in degrees and minutes) for each of the lettered positions. Use the proper format (ex. 24  05’ N). a _______________________ b _______________________ c _______________________ d _______________________ Location: Coordinate Systems From www.hammondmap.com a b c d 3800’N 3900’ N • Geog 30 1 • Page 2 of 3 2. Using the figure at the right, accurately estimate the longitude (in degrees and minutes) for each of the lettered positions. Use the proper format (ex. 112  09’ W). a _______________________ b _______________________ c _______________________ d _______________________ 3. Using Google Earth Online https://earth.google.com/web/ list the latitudes (in degrees and minutes) for the following cities. Be sure to watch reference video explaining this program. Degrees should be found at the bottom right corner of window, Latitude is the first measurement given with either a N or S. In your answer, be sure to use the proper format. Using Google Earth Online https://earth.google.com/web/ list the longitudes (in degrees and minutes) for the following cities. Be sure to watch reference video explaining this program. Degrees should be found a t the bottom right corner of window, longitude is the second measurement given with either a E or W. In your answer, be sure to use the proper format. Complete the following for further practice. 1. On the map above, complete the following: a. Boldly trace and label the Equator and the Prime Meridian. b. On the left side, label 15 , 30 , 45 , 60 , and 75  latitude – both North and South! c. Along the bottom, label 30 , 60 , 90  … up to 180  longitude – both East and West! 2. On the map above place a dot at the following coordinates, and label with the corresponding letter. a. 60 S : 45 E b. 15 S : 150 W c. 15 N : 150 E d. 0 : 0  e. 75 N : 45 W 3. Using Google Earth Online, list the latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes, and seconds for the following locations . https://earth.google.com/web/ Location (city, lake, etc ) Latitude : Longitude Christchurch, New Zealand Green Bay, Wisconsin MINSK, Belarus LITTLE AMERICA, Wyoming
